L´Escala
(Description of L´Escala)

Entertainment and leisure time

  Entertainment:

Everyday at the old centre of L´Escala there is the fruits and vegetables market, and on Sundays- at the beach promenade-the big market. In the centre of L´Escala and the zone of Riells you will find a variety of shops, restaurants, bars, pubs and discotheques. This area is also very important and famous because it’s where the traditional summer-festivals of L´Escala occur.

In our region you can practice all kinds of sports, as for example diving, sailing, fishing, trips on a boat or a ship, go for a ride, tennis, cycling or parachuting (this last sport is practiced in a village called Empuriabrava which is about 20 km from L´Escala). But also the enthusiasts of golf can have a nice time at the following golf-courses: in Pals (about 20 km from L´Escala) or in Peralada (about 30 km).

Culture and History:

Griechisch-Römische Ausgrabungen:

You will find the Greek-Roman ruins of Sant Martí d´Empúries, 2 km away from L´Escala, where in 1992 arrived the Olympic Flame.

Today you can visit the remains of these settlements as well as the museum that shows some of the artefacts from that time. Excavations on the site have still not been completed.

Interesting Nearby Cities:

The city of Figueras is a nice place, with lots of shops, the Rambles, etc. We just suggest for the “Dalí-Museum”, but sure your kids would enjoy more the day in the “TOYS-Museum” ;-). . The fans of the painter should also go to his house in Portlligat which can also be visited inside, or the area of Cadaqués where he spent a lot of time.

The antique area of Girona would also be a good idea for one of those days in which you don’t have "Beach-"weather. It’s great to see the wonderful Cathedral, the hidden streets and the Ramblas with lots of shops, and walking along the river Onyar.

La Bisbal is the perfect town to visit if you haven’t found a special present for your friends yet. There are many different Ceramic/Pottery-souvenirs to choose from...

Trips:

To Blanes to visit the nice Botanic-Gardens.

To Olot, which has a very interesting volcanic-area, about 45 Km from L´Escala.

To the Catalan Pyrenees, with a large countryside of hills, mountains and rivers, where you can practice all kinds of adventure-sports.
